Rick Grimes, a chief of police deputy
has been shot and placed in the hospital after chasing a crazy old man
on the highway. After months of being in a coma, Rick wakes up and finds
nobody around him. The walls are torn, blood spatters are on the walls,
and the place looks like it's been ransacked. After further venturing
down the hallway, Rick opens a door and a large room full of dead
corpses greet him. One of the dead try to tackle him, pushing him down
the stairs. Rick flees just by an inch before being caught, and arrives
in the courtyard, rows of dead bodies lined up (probably placed by the
military). Not a long ways from home, Rick struggles to get back to his
house. One the way there, he finds a dead corpse that is still moving,
totally obliterated and burned into the soil. He passes it up, a tear
running down his face. Once he arrives at his home, Rick finds the home
raided and no trace of his family. After his minor breakout and trying
to face reality, he steps outside to see if he's still "sleeping".
Then, *SMACK*! Rick is hit by something hard in the back of the head.
When he wakes up a few hours later, he is strapped down in a bed, face
to face with an African American man named Morgan. His son, Duane,
knocked him out with a shovel (thinking Rick was a zombie). Morgan
questions Rick's injury, fearing it is some kind of bite. "Why would you
say that?" Rick replies. "Did you get bit. Maybe even scratched, blood in your mouth, anything physical?"
Rick has no idea what the man is talking about. "The monsters out
there?" Rick guesses. "Where have you been?" Rick explains his injury,
then Morgan explains to Rick how the walkers out in the street came to
be. "They called the people to go to the city for shelter, food,
protection. We figured it'd be safer out here. This seems like a safe
neighborhood." Rick figures that his family may have gone to Atlanta for
the protection of the military, and sets out to look for his family.
While on his way, he breaks into a house looking for gas (he arrived in a
car). When looking inside, he finds the family inside dead. When going
around the back, however, he finds a horse... And rides with it into
Atlanta. THAT'S THE LAST MISTAKE OF HIS LIFE.
JK.
Rick
gets surrounded by an undead army of corpses, where they attack his
horse and eat it, attracting lots of more zombies. Rick crawls out,
barely alive. Somebody grabs his back -- Glenn, an Asian who was
scouting the city for supplies... For his group. Rick follows him out of
the city, and then finds his family. Carl, his son, probably 8 years
old, and his wife Lori. His best friend, Shane, has been protecting
them. However, the longer Rick stays with the group, he uncovers that
his friend Shane has slept with his wife, who both thought Rick was
dead. Shane cannot hold back his affection for Lori after Rick comes
back, and tries to kill Rick in the woods. Carl ends up shooting
Shane... And that is the end of the book. The group would like to move
elsewhere safer, being that close to the army of undead and all.
This is probably one of the most intense parts of the season, and the plot/setting just keeps pulling you in.
